Fire Mitigation

In 2023, 1604 fires destroyed 117,553 acres of land throughout Montana.

Reducing forest density and thinning tree canopies to prevent fires from leaping across treetops can significantly mitigate the intensity and spread of wildfires and help keep our homes and loved ones safe. So, why don’t more people do it?

We think the answer is simple. Most people do not have the experience to do the work themselves and, when they try to hire a professional, they hit roadblock after roadblock. The cost is prohibitively expensive, no one can get them on the schedule for one to two years, or their job is simply “too small” for the contractor to consider.

Cords for Care offers free and low-cost fire mitigation work throughout the Flathead Valley. We use the collected timber to create firewood, which we offer to the community free of charge. If you need help, reach out.
